Some residents of Tybee Island are now returning home.

The island was closed and inaccessible for an additional day because Chatham County emergency officials said the island sustained the heaviest damage in the Savannah area from tropical storm Irma and delayed.

Swann Seiler, a spokesperson with Georgia Power, said power outages will continue to be an issue on the island over the next few weeks.

People who live on Tybee Island, off Savannah’s coast, are under orders from their city government to leave starting at 8 a.m. Friday, a day earlier than the areas under Gov. Nathan Deal’s evacuation order. That is because high tides ahead of the hurricane are a concern on the island.

A popular weekend destination for many in Atlanta and around the Southeast has attracted criticism from good government groups thanks to a new city ordinance freezing the ethics complaint process beginning 90 days before local elections, and ending when election results are certified.

“We’re all on our best behavior all the time,” quipped Tybee Island City Council member Bill Garbett, who voted for the changes to the city’s ethics ordinance. “It really is not that important,” he said.

Authorities say lifeguards had to keep people out of the water at Georgia's largest public beach after an alligator was spotted in the sand and surf.

The Savannah Morning News reports that authorities called in a licensed trapper to capture the 8-foot alligator on Tybee Island. The gator was found taking a swim and strolling on the sand early Thursday.
