Some residents of Tybee Island are now returning home.

The island was closed and inaccessible for an additional day because Chatham County emergency officials said the island sustained the heaviest damage in the Savannah area from tropical storm Irma and delayed.

Swann Seiler, a spokesperson with Georgia Power, said power outages will continue to be an issue on the island over the next few weeks.

Georgia has given permission for a TV film company that produces AMC's "The Walking Dead" to film a human corpse half-buried in a tidal pool and other scenes on Jekyll Island.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources issued a letter of permission for Stalwart Films to shoot the scenes on the island.

Foodies and people who get a hankering for special Southern cuisine are invited to an event in the Southern part of the state.

Jekyll Island is hosting the 10th annual Shrimp and Grits Festival this weekend.

"The secret to the success is just having our friends come and enjoy good food and great entertainment in a beautiful setting," says Jekyll Island Authority spokeswoman Jessica Scott.

As tourism slows down this fall, Jekyll Island hopes to lure more off-season visitors with a new attraction: a beachfront rink that lets patrons take in sweeping ocean views while gliding on ice skates.

The island state park announced this month plans to build a $30,000 outdoor skating rink that uses synthetic ice — sheets of dense plastic that are slick enough for ice skating. That allows for holiday-themed skating without the need for a frozen surface in a climate that can still reach 70 degrees between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

Hotels on state-owned Jekyll Island are not doing enough to protect the endangered loggerhead turtles that nest on the island. According to data collected by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, a few hotels on the island are letting too much light shine onto the beach during nesting season.
