Beautiful City

Beautiful City features the parks, paths, nature preserves and greenspace of metro Atlanta. The series aims to showcase Atlanta’s natural beauty and we hope Beautiful City will  inspire, educate, and provide options on where you can go to “get away from Atlanta, without ever leaving Atlanta.”

Beautiful City is made possible by a grant from The Kendeda Fund, and through a partnership with Park Pride, the only nonprofit working with communities in Atlanta and DeKalb to help them improve their parks.

Beautiful City is WABE's series about places to go in Atlanta to ... get away from Atlanta.

Today, that’s North Decatur.

There, the South Peachtree Creek Trail links two neighborhoods, two parks and even two sports.

On one end are the baseball fields of Medlock Park and, on the other, the tennis courts of Mason Mill Park.

But you’ll find that this path does much more than connect Point A to Point B.

Today we continue our series "Beautiful City" ─ places to go in Atlanta  ... to get away from Atlanta.

But today we’re doing something a little different.

We’re heading to a spot in the city that many will be familiar with: the Eastside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine.

On any given day, you’ll find crowds of people biking, walking, blading and jogging down this paved path.

Today we’re off to the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, near downtown. There, across North Avenue from Ponce City Market, is a plot of land that’s seen a lot of transformation: the Historic Fourth Ward Park.

About 100 years ago, it was part of the Ponce de Leon amusement park. By the early 2000s, it was a dumping ground.

Now, the Historic Fourth Ward Park is a park that developers call an emerald on the necklace of the Atlanta BeltLine.

Today, we’re off to an East Atlanta neighborhood called Lake Claire, near Candler Park.

Stuck in traffic on Dekalb Avenue, you might find yourself watching the MARTA train go by or staring at the long lines of boxcars along the road.

But across the street, hidden from view by a grassy cliff, is a greenspace that may be unlike any other park or preserve in Atlanta.

Today we’re heading off to a Buckhead neighborhood called Peachtree Heights East.

There, beside a 2-acre pond, you’re bound to run into some of the neighbors.

You might find them preening, swimming, or quacking.

Today, we’re off to Buckhead.

If you’re ever driving down Roswell Road toward Chastain Park, you’ll pass over a small stream called Nancy Creek. Right before then, across from Pike Nursery, it’s easy to drive past the Blue Heron Nature Preserve, a 25-acre haven for native wildlife.

Beautiful City is WABE's series about places to go in Atlanta to get away from Atlanta.

Today we’re heading off to Kirkwood, an East Atlanta neighborhood in between Edgewood and Decatur.

Hidden here is a small patch of nature that, in a way, is just as manmade as the concrete jungle that surrounds it.

The Kirkwood Urban Forest is a combination meadow, community garden, and forest space that used to be something completely different.

Today, we head to North Buckhead. Despite being one of the most affluent communities in Atlanta, it actually has less park space than any other neighborhood.

But its residents are working to change that -- by developing some of the hidden and unused spaces around them. WABE’s Stephannie Stokes has the story of one of these parks: the Mountain Way Common.

Today we’re heading off to the urban forest of the Bush Mountain Outdoor Activity Center. The 40-year-old park, hidden in the middle of a Southwest Atlanta neighborhood, features two miles of trails, a large wooden playground, a cabin-like educational center, and a community garden that sits on the former practice lot of the Atlanta Black Crackers baseball team.

Today, we’ll learn about a neighborhood reclaiming both its history, and its future, in one of its neighborhood parks. WABE’s Kate Sweeney takes us to the 120-acre Cascade Springs Nature Preserve in Southwest Atlanta.
