If you're at all familiar with 1950's sci-fi motion pictures, you've probably heard the unmistakable tones of the theremin.

Originally known as an "etherphone", the theremin is an electronic musical instrument with a distinct method for playing: you don't touch it.

More than just a sci-fi sound effect, the theremin has an intriguing history dating back to 1920's Russia, and its own unique place in music today.

We caught up with one local performer Scott Burland to find out what all the buzzing, whirring, and swooshing is about.

Find out more about Scott Burland's tag-team project, Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel.
