StoryCorps: Patricia LaGloria Spence and JeJuan Stewart

Jan 7, 2014

JeJuan Stewart and Patricia LaGloria Spence at StoryCorps.

From the time she was in first grade, Patricia LaGloria Spence knew she wanted to be a teacher. In 1979, she was assigned to be one of the first African American teachers to integrate the all-white Miami Lakes Elementary school. It wasn’t an easy transition. In the StoryCorps booth, Patricia told her daughter JeJuan Stewart about her first year.

This story was recorded in partnership with the Atlanta History Center, which hosts Atlanta’s StoryCorps booth.
