StoryCorps Atlanta: The Laughter And Sorrow Of Ga.’s HEROs

Aug 16, 2016

Aug. 16 marks 100 years of the Georgia Department of Transportation. It was also about 20 years ago now that the GDOT launched the first HERO (Highway Emergency Response Operators) units.

While the program is still relatively young, it has grown from a fleet of 12 rescue vehicles patrolling about 100 miles to over 100 that cover nearly 400 miles of our roadways.

To celebrate the centennial, the very first manager of the HERO program, Michael Hendon, met with the current manager, Jason Josey, at StoryCorps Atlanta to swap stories and advice.  Michael recalled a “flighty” encounter with a stranded motorist.

This story was recorded in partnership with the Atlanta History Center, which hosts Atlanta's StoryCorps Booth.
