Saturday Shopping: Keeping it Local

You’ve heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Small business owners are hoping you’ll add “Small Business Saturday” to your holiday shopping vocabulary.

Hundreds of small businesses in metro Atlanta are offering deals and incentives Saturday to get you to spend your dollars on Main Street instead of at the mall.

And those businesses’ communities are supporting their efforts. Katie Abel, Decatur’s Special Events Coordinator, says the city is sponsoring entertainment and giveaways downtown and in Oakhurst to help bring people in.

“One of the things I think that is the most iconic about Decatur is all of our local and independent restaurants and shops,” said Abel.  “And we want to take this opportunity to show off what Decatur has.”

And it makes good business sense, according to Kyle Jackson, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business. He says that dollars spent locally get reinvested locally. “Small business owners are the ones that help fund our schools and our roads and are the first ones to give to civic groups, and charities, and youth sports,” said Jackson.  “And the best way we can recognize and reward them this holiday season is to drive more shopping their way.”

American Express initiated Small Business Saturday two years ago. Amex says, this year, almost half of small businesses nationwide will participate.
