Political Breakfast: New Session, 'Campus Carry' and Casinos

Jan 13, 2017

It was a busy first week of the Georgia Legislature's 2017-18 session.  Governor Deal delivered his State of the State message, with a focus on failing schools; supporters of a "campus carry" bill took their first steps toward reviving it; and there were quiet, high-level meetings about possible casino legislation.

On the Political Breakfast segment of "Morning Edition," Denis O'Hayer got a rundown and analysis of the week at the Gold Dome, from Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson and Republican strategist Brian Robinson.  Johnson is a former national southern regional director of President Obama's 2012 campaign; Robinson is a former deputy chief of staff for Governor Nathan Deal.

(Note:  The expanded version includes some thoughts on Georgians who played roles in the confirmation hearings for Trump administration cabinet nominees.  Also, the ongoing debate over Medicaid expansion in Georgia, and the Governor's proposal to fight the opioid addiction crisis in the state.)
