"It went up because of some normal fluctuations that we see each January and that the number of jobs and people in the labor force dropped while the number of  new layoffs as measured by initial claims for unemployment benefits went up,"  GDOL spokesman Sam Hall said.

The jobless rate was 5 percent in January 2017 and  5.2 percent in January 2016.

"Over the year, January to January, the number of jobs actually increased by 96,800 and this is the largest January-to-January job growth on record in Atlanta," Hall said. Among the fields with a boost in employment: professional and business services and leisure and hospitality.
