Jasmine Guy Goes Back To School In New Series 'The Quad'

Jan 25, 2017

Jasmine Guy just can’t seem to stay out of college.

She first gained national attention as an actress for her role on "A Different World," a TV series following a group of students at a fictional historically black college. Now Guy is in a new series premiering Feb. 1 on BET. "The Quad" is also set on the campus of an imagined HBCU, though this time she’s playing a faculty member instead of a student.

In an interview with Lois Reitzes on “City Lights,” Guy quipped, “this is my third fictitious HBCU, and I have three fictitious degrees to go with these schools” (the third being her turn as a student named Dina in the 1988 Spike Lee film, “School Daze”).

But Guy is no stranger to the campus culture of a real-life HBCU; she grew up across the street from Morehouse College, where her father also taught philosophy and religion and her uncle directed the famed Glee Club.

In the interview audio posted above, Guy discusses her character on “The Quad” as well as her one-woman show, “Raisin’ Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey.”
