Drone enthusiasts are calling a ban on the unmanned vehicles within five miles of Georgia's Capitol an overreach of authority by state officials.
But Georgia Building Authority officials say the change is necessary and follows federal guidelines. The new resolution prevents drones within 5 miles of a helipad adjacent to the Capitol in downtown Atlanta and around the governors' mansion in Buckhead.
While the Federal Aviation Authority continues developing strict restrictions on drone use, state and local officials have stepped in across the country. The National Conference of State Legislatures found more than 150 bills introduced this year in 45 states.
But drone supporters say those limits often are too broad or impossible to enforce.
Georgia lawmakers say a study committee will examine the issue this year.
