Connie Stokes Steps Aside for Jason Carter; Will Run for Lt. Governor Instead
Former State Senator Connie Stokes had announced her run for governor back in September. But Jason Carter’s announcement that he will seek the state’s top job has changed Stokes’ plans.
Stokes says she is now endorsing Jason Carter for governor and will run for lieutenant governor instead.
“This has been an ongoing conversation,” said Stokes. “Was he going to run for governor; was I going to run for governor? But we agreed early on we would work together. We would be on the same team. And that’s what you see today.”
Stokes, a Democrat, says she will continue to emphasize education as her chief priority.
She is the first candidate of either party in Georgia to announce intentions to run for Lieutenant Governor next year. There are no laws limiting the number of terms a Georgia lieutenant governor may hold, so two-term incumbent Casey Cagle, a Republican, is eligible to run again.
