A bribery scandal involving contractors who did business with the city of Atlanta has led the city to change some of its laws.
The Atlanta City Council agreed to a new ordinance Monday aimed at making emergency contracts more transparent.
Those are contracts where the city has to make a quick decision because there’s an event like a snowstorm.
According to the new law, the procurement office needs to explain why it chose one contractor over another during the emergency and also justify any costs above a certain amount in the contract.
The office then must make that contract public within three days.
Two contractors have admitted to federal prosecutors that they paid more than a million dollars in bribes to win city bids.
