Art is therapeutic. That's the guiding principle of Paint Love, a nonprofit in Atlanta that connects artists with kids. The artists conduct workshops through nonprofits or schools with youth who are facing poverty or trauma.
Julie Ann McKevitt founded Paint Love in 2013, and since then it’s grown exponentially. In 2016, they reached about 2,000 kids with over 60 events.
“We’re not therapists, but we think that art is incredibly therapeutic,” she said. “Drawing something as simple as a flower, that can mean something so much and then having the opportunity to talk about your art with someone else I think is really significant and important.”
McKevitt and volunteer artist Ellen Gadberry spoke with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes about the organization. Paint Love's art auction is next month on Oct. 19 at Monday Night Brewing's West End location.
