Additional CDC Workers May Have Been Exposed to Anthrax
A greater number of workers at the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may have been exposed to live anthrax.
The agency now says as many as 84 employees may have had contact with the bacteria. That’s up from 75 reported yesterday. More than 50 of those employees are now taking an antibiotic treatment. And some of those are also taking the anthrax vaccine.
The exposure may have taken place earlier this month, when CDC scientists working in a biosafety lab failed to follow the proper procedure to deactivate the bacteria. The potentially infectious samples were then transferred to three other labs that were not equipped to handle the live bacteria. Officials say none of employees have exhibited any symptoms.
